The Trapeze Net

An entry for the ideas competition for the re-use of the Philip Johnson designed New York State Pavilion, this project imagines the Pavilion as a social, buoyant place for exceptional outdoor art installations. The Trapeze Net functions as an inserted ground plane drawing visitors into the restored space. Once inside, people float above the existing floors and are enveloped in the colored light of the canopy. The voyeurism of the original experience is heighten by the exaggerated sectional condition. The Pavilion’s magnificent volume will allow for the innovative curation of large-scale sculpture installations as assisted by the reconfigurable, semi-transparent flooring system of the Trapeze Net.
